How Learning Something New is the Hardest & Best Thing for You
Mar 12, 2025
There’s this post I read recently that stuck with me: Learning something new will make you feel stupid, even though it’s making you smarter. Trying a new skill will make you feel unqualified, even though it’s expanding your potential.
And it went on and on, reminding me of something we all seem to forget—when we start something new, it’s hard.
We don’t like to be bad at things. We don’t like to feel uncomfortable. So at some point, many of us stop challenging ourselves. We get into a career. We settle into a routine. We get comfortable. And then... we stop growing.
The Stagnation of Adulthood
Think about it—how often do you intentionally push yourself to grow once you hit adulthood? We spend the first 20+ years of our lives constantly learning, evolving, adapting. And then suddenly, we hit a screeching halt.
We stop taking risks. We stick to what we know. We get trapped in the same cycles, the same daily patterns, the same auto-pilot version of ourselves.
Meanwhile, my baby (who isn’t even born yet) has grown 3 cm long femur bones, developed all four chambers of their heart, and has ten fingers and ten toes—all in just six weeks. That’s some serious personal development happening in my womb! And I swear, it’s probably why I have zero energy and sometimes stare at the walls for hours when I’m supposed to be working.
The point is—growth is constant when we’re young. And it should be constant as adults too. But it takes intention.
The Challenge of Learning Something New
Right now, I’m in the thick of learning and creating. I’m putting the final touches on the 50-hour Sound Practitioner Certification, developing a Yoga & Wellness Retreat Hosting course, and refining the Hybrid 200hr YTT curriculum. And let me tell you—I feel like a total beginner all over again. Unqualified, overwhelmed, and questioning everything.
But here’s what I know:
- That discomfort? It’s proof of expansion.
- Feeling lost? It means you’re stepping into something new.
- Doubting yourself? It means you care about doing it well.
And on the other side? Growth. Confidence. Mastery.
So if you’re feeling stuck, uninspired, or like you’re living on repeat—here’s my advice: Learn something new. It is one of the fastest ways to shake yourself out of a rut & create real change in your life.
3 Steps to Push Yourself Out of Stagnation
- Pick Something That Scares You (In a Good Way).
- What’s something you’ve always wanted to learn but have avoided because it feels too hard? Yoga? Sound healing? Speaking another language? Hosting retreats?
- Growth happens at the edge of your comfort zone—so lean in.
- Commit to the Process, Not the Outcome.
- You’re going to feel awkward. You’re going to suck at first. That’s the point.
- Focus on showing up, not being perfect.
- Surround Yourself with Expanders.
- Find a community of people who are also stepping into something new. Support matters. Accountability matters.
- This is exactly what happens inside a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training—even if you never want to teach yoga, you will walk out transformed.
3 Journal Prompts to Move Through Limiting Beliefs
- What’s something I’ve always wanted to learn but have been too afraid to try? What’s stopping me?
- What’s a time I did something scary and came out stronger on the other side? How can I channel that same energy now?
- If I could remove fear from the equation, what would I do next?
