Choosing the right mentor for a more embodied practice

May 03, 2024

When hiring a mentor to strengthen your skills and hone your practice as a yoga teacher & wellness professional, it’s key to find someone who is the right fit for you.

Just because a mentor comes across your path, whether on social media or through personal connections, doesn’t mean working with them is going to make the impact you desire.

Mentorship is so much more than just learning how to teach your students yoga or build a personal wellness brand. It’s a life-changing experience that helps you awaken personal goals and professional visions you may not have even known existed.

One of the key elements to consider when enlisting the support of a mentor is not only their professional experience as a yoga teacher, but if they align with the beliefs and values you carry on your heart.

I’m sharing my own experiences with mentorship to help you make aligned decisions for your own practice - both personally and as a wellness professional.

My experience working with coaches NOT in the yoga industry.

I believe there are intrinsically good coaches out there who want to see businesses flourish. I don’t believe they necessarily need to be in the yoga industry to help your yoga business thrive.

However, from my own experience working with a coach who was not in the industry, here’s what I have to say.

It’s so important that your coach understands the core principles and beliefs of yoga.

As a wellness professional, your business model needs to align with your practices, mindset, and motivation for continuous inner and professional growth.

If the coach you hire doesn’t have a clear picture of what that looks like, they won’t be able to give you the guidance you need to run a business that encompasses and cultivates your inner magic.

My experience working with coaches that weren’t aligned with my goals.

As wellness professionals, we share many common threads that weave us together, but there is so much room for variation in our goals.

While our souls are rooted in yoga's peace and transformation, we often want different outcomes from our individual practices and teachings.

I’ve worked with coaches who weren’t aligned with my own version of success. While their encouragement was on point,  I believe that it stalled my motivation to create momentum in my business because we weren’t on the same page when it came to the vision I had for The Embodied Warrior and my YTTs.

The magic of working with aligned mentors.

I’ve also joined coaching containers, where the support has moved me to create embodied offers and programs that have fueled my own inner fire.

Over the past few months, I’ve regained the inspiration to design programs that reflect that! This is exactly why I’m so excited to announce the YTT Mentorship and 1:1 Coaching

It’s important to note that while I’m thrilled to bring this program to life, it may have happened much sooner if I had worked with a more aligned mentor!

How to make aligned decisions on WHO to work with in a mentorship or coaching container.

What you learn in your mentorships will manifest in how you show up for your students, your practice, and yourself.

To make sure you’re making the right decision, I encourage you to do solid research!

Explore every corner of the program and compare it to programs from other mentors. Take a close look at their promised benefits, specific features, frequency of 1:1 support, and if they have a community of other yoga teachers you can connect with!

Review their credentials. Before you decide to work with a mentor, take a peek behind the curtain to see what their credentials are. If they are continuously traveling, exploring, and participating in education and development programs, that’s a good sign that they will be invested in your growth, too.

Look at their persona. A successful mentor-student relationship does rely on matching vibrations. Dive into your potential mentor’s content to see if it matches your energy. If your intuition is leading you to say yes based on the information you’ve found, pursue a 1:1 call with that person to gather all of the fine details about the mentorship.

If your intuition is leading you to say yes based on the information you’ve found, pursue a 1:1 call with that person to gather all of the fine details about the mentorship.

And remember - it’s okay to request more than one 1:1 call with a potential mentor.

Meeting with them multiple times gives you the opportunity to lay all of your concerns on the table so you have the information you need to make the right decision.

Someone who truly wants you to succeed will send you their calendar link with open arms. This is a green flag because it shows that they care about the long-term impact the right mentorship makes on your practice, your peace, and your journey to becoming your highest self.

See what other students have said.

Peer feedback can help you make the decision with more confidence. Look to see if this mentor has posted testimonials or program reviews to their website or social media accounts. Feel free to ask them to connect you with current or past students (with permission, of course) so they can give you a first-hand look at their experience.

Weigh the pros and cons to make your final, confident decision.

Once you’ve collected all of the evidence you need to say “yes!”, take one last look at the benefits and downsides before making your final decision. Don’t take this lightly!  The pros should far outweigh the cons.

If the container pricing feels unaligned, explore payment options that feel good for you.

Agreeing to a program that doesn’t work with your budget can lead to internal anxiety and resentment that will affect your experience. Do not pay in full unless you are 1,000% sure that this program is for you!

In conclusion. . .

It's critical to do your research before diving into a membership or coaching package. Doing the legwork upfront will amplify your results for a more positive and impactful experience. When you work with someone who aligns with your own values and beliefs, what you can achieve as a yoga teacher or wellness professional is limitless.
